Data Scientist - Analytics and Software Engineering

Birchbox (http://birchbox.com), is looking for data scientists and senior data scientists with software engineering skills to work on data-driven tasks, including:

• Monthly box personalization: tailoring the selection of samples sent to each Birchbox subscriber
• Full-size product recommendation: based on purchasing history, samples received, profile and browsing data, etc.
• Analytics for the marketing team and for our brand partners
• Improvements to offline and online reporting of key metrics

Requirements:

• Experience modeling data and designing feature sets
• Deep working experience applying statistics and machine learning techniques to real-world data
• Fluency in a programming or scripting language (e.g. Python, Ruby, R, Java ) for fast prototyping
• Experience building and working with "big-data" platforms (e.g. Hadoop/Mad-reduce), especially applied to web-analytics and/or time-series
• Excellent data-visualization skills
• Ability to extract insights and communicate to a non-technical audience

Pluses:

• Ability to write complex SQL queries in short order
• Experience building advanced analytics dashboards
• Previous experience in e-commerce and/or start-up environments
• MS or PhD in a relevant discipline

The technology team at Birchbox is responsible for development (and maintenance) of the company's customer-facing sites (in the United States, France, the UK, and Spain), managing hosted and cloud infrastructure, and closely supporting other teams (logistics, marketing, et al.) in our 110+-person company. We work with a wide variety of open-source technologies: Debian-based servers; Chef deployments; Ruby on Rails, Java and PHP services; and Python, Perl and R scripts. The size of our team and the breadth of its responsibilities means we rely on our engineers to be self-motivated and quickly follow through on tasks without requiring close supervision. In return our engineers are given leeway to use their own initiative.
Our team spans software engineering, technical operations, product, and data science. Our challenges include:
